WINDHAM — Americans for Prosperity- New Hampshire AFP will join thousands of activists across the state on April 15th for a taxpayer tea party on the Capitol steps in Concord to protest wasteful government spending at the state and federal levels.
“I could think of no better venue for a rally focused on out-of-control spending taking place in New Hampshire and Washington than the steps of the Capitol here in Concord,” said AFP New Hampshire State Director Corey Lewandowski. “With the legislature in session that day and the Senate poised to discuss the bi-annual spending bill (HB 2), it’s the perfect place to bring our grievances to our elected officials.”
New Hampshire has traditionally been a model state for maintaining a balanced budget, however, the state is expected to have a budget shortfall of almost $500 million for FY 2010. In order to close this funding gap, the state is considering everything from a Capital gains tax, to increasing the gas tax to increasing the tax on cigarettes, increasing taxes on room and meals, and even taxing non-profit lottery winnings.
“The citizens of this country just borrowed a trillion dollars to bail out big-spending state and local governments,” said Ted Maravelias, AFP’s Deputy State Director. “There is simply no excuse for any state or local government to turn around and raise taxes. How many times are we going to ask the citizens of this country to bailout the government’s big spending habits?”
Americans for Prosperity-New Hampshire launched www.stopthebailoutnh.com in December 2008 to give the citizens of New Hampshire an opportunity to tell elected officials the hard working people of New Hampshire don’t support government bailouts. Over 2,000 citizens of New Hampshire signed the petition.
