We want to share with you a victory for taxpayers in Lincoln.
Last week Mayor Chris Beutler's committee to review the mayor’s salary recommended a 20% raise increase.
AFP-Nebraska acted, we immediately sent an action alert to our members and many of you called and emailed our elected officials telling them to reject such a large raise considering the current economic climate we face.
You won. Early this week Mayor Beutler held a press conference and announced he would reject any salary increase as long as he is mayor. This was the right decision for Mayor Beutler to make, and we appreciate his willingness to accept the same sacrifices that thousands of Lincoln families have made during difficult economic times.
The issue is not whether the mayor is underpaid, the issue is that tens of thousands of Lincolnites are underpaid in this economy, and it is wrong to ask Lincolnites to pay higher taxes (the City has increased a number of taxes this year) in order to pay our public sector more. We thank Mayor Beutler for listening to the taxpayers of Lincoln.
