AFP-Kansas kicked off September with a November Is Coming event in Overland Park, Kan. The November Is Coming Bus rolled into Johnson County, Kansas on Sept. 1, with a stop in Overland Park. About 130 Kansans showed up to sign the November Is Coming petition, volunteer to help with our issue education campaign, and to fight big government policies.
Attendees signed the petition, joined our door-to-door and phone bank efforts, and took home literature to distribute to their friends and neighbors about the big government, freedom-killing policies pushed through Congress in recent months.
The 2010 Kansas State Fair is just around the corner. The fair runs Sept. 10-19 in Hutchinson, and we will be there distributing information about the Kansas budget and economy, recruiting new activists, and promoting the general cause of limited government and fiscal responsibility. We have volunteers lined up to help man the booth all week.
Sept. 12-18 is national Constitution Week, and there are several activities being organized in Wichita and Hayesville, Kan., to celebrate our Founding Fathers and documents, including a family picnic in honor of the Founding Fathers, public lectures, and a public reading of the Constitution.
We have a very active chapter in Wichita that holds several meetings a month, and offers programs such as our Local Government 101 course, which teaches civic involvement at the local level; the Topeka chapter will focus on this program at the September meeting.
Our local chapters have also sponsored Friedman Legacy of Freedom luncheons every July, and screenings of various films such as Not Evil Just Wrong, Flunked, The Call of the Entrepreneur, and Begging for Billionaires. We have also worked with a Kansas accountant to conduct audits of numerous local budgets, and to help us present model budgets at the state and local level. (In 2010, we have produced models for the Kansas state budget, and county budgets in Johnson, Sedgwick and Linn counties. We will be working on Topeka this year as well.)
