Who DOES Support This Bill?

Despite the decision of 60 senators to move the Reid health care bill forward, support among the American public is at the lowest level yet measured in nearly two dozen tracking polls conducted since June. In fact, the senate’s 60-39 vote almost mirrors the OPPOSITION to the bill among the public (56% oppose while only 38% support the plan).

Important constituencies fear the proposals will not lead to real reform and people overwhelmingly do not believe the claim that this bill will lead to lower health care costs (a mere 16% of respondents at this point). Well over half the respondents believes costs will go up and quality will go down. Seniors, potentially the biggest losers in the legislation with over $464 billion in Medicare cuts being proposed, aren’t fooled either, opposing the current plan by almost two to one.

And judging by the statements of a few key fence-sitting Democratic Senators after the vote, it doesn’t appear that even 60% of the Senate supports the legislation. Along with Ben Nelson and Mary Landrieu, who’ve both expressed opposition to the bill in its current form but voted to move it forward, Sens. Lieberman and Lincoln seemed to take back their support after giving it.

“This is a radical departure from the way we’ve responded to the market in America in the past,” Lieberman said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet The Press.” ” We have never before said, in a given business, we don’t trust the companies in it, so we’re going to have the government go into that business.”

I’m prepared to vote against moving to the next stage of consideration as long as a public option is included,” Lincoln said.

As Washington continues to lose credibility on passing real reform that will not break the bank, one can’t help but ask who does support this legislation and how much are they getting paid?
