Americans for Prosperity Foundation Hawaii teamed up Hawaii Pacific University’s Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) and the HPU Entrepreneurship Center on July 29th to celebrate the anniversary of Milton Friedman’s 99th birthday, his legacy and his free market concepts that have helped improve the lives of entire populations around the world.

Prof. Ken Schoolland began the event with an introduction of Dr. Friedman’s ideas on monetary policy, free trade, school choice, ending the prohibition of marijuana and elimination of the draft. Friedman’s ideas were controversial among status quo thinkers throughout much of his life, but history ultimately proved his economic theories correct and Keynesian theories wrong.

The Americans for Prosperity Foundation – Hawaii will honor Dr. Milton Friedman on July 29 as part of a national day of recognition for the Nobel Laureate, his work, theories and contributions. The Friedman Legacy for Freedom Day is being celebrated in 46 U.S. states and in countries around the world.

The free luncheon is being sponsored by the Foundation for Educational Choice, the continuation of the Milton and Rose D. Friedman Foundation. The event will explore how Dr. Friedman and his free-market theories have benefited mankind and how they can move our country forward amidst current economic uncertainty.

“We decided to create an event this year for students to introduce them to Milton Friedman and his efforts to promote educational choice,” said Jay McWilliams, co-chair of Americans for Prosperity Foundation – Hawaii.

OAHU- Grassroots free-market group Americans for Prosperity is pleased to announce Jay McWilliams and Laura Brown as the new Grassroots Chairs of Americans for Prosperity-Hawaii.

“The citizens of Hawaii are faced with $500 million in tax increases in the next 2 years alone to pay for significant increases in spending in Hawaii’s $22 billion budget,” Americans for Prosperity President Tim Phillips said. “Americans for Prosperity is proud to welcome aboard Jay and Laura who will lead the charge for fiscal responsibility and freedom in Hawaii.”

Jay McWilliams is a graduate of the University of Hawaii and has worked for numerous magazines and business newspapers. Jay also helped establish a daily online newspaper dedicated to making government more open and accessible to the public.
