Bangor - The prospect of higher energy taxes energized folks to hold a press conference in Bangor Thursday.

The Maine Heritage Policy Center and Americans For Prosperity are trying to send a message to Maine's US Senators to say no to the tax hikes.

The House of Representatives passed a 2-dollar per barrel oil tax to help pay for oil spill response.

The groups say if the tax holds up we'll see a big difference at the gas pump.

BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- Most Americans agree it would be a good thing to reduce our dependence on foreign energy but two groups in the state are saying the way to achieve that goal isn't by raising taxes.

The Maine Heritage Policy Center and the state's chapter of "Americans for Prosperity sent that message Thursday to Maine senators Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins. The two groups are asking the senators to avoid discussing legislation about energy until a new Congress takes office in January.
